Photography Courses 2012 are ready to book!

Our photography courses for 2012 are no live to book on the Going Digital Yorkshire website. As well as our Digital SLR1 and SLR2 photography courses, we have added some very exciting new ones and a couple of new venue's also. Roundhay Park Leeds and East Riddlesden Hall Keighley are our two exciting new venues to be added to the current list of amazing venues we have for our photography courses in Yorkshire. Roundhay Park will be our home for photography courses in the Leeds area which not only offers beautiful landscapes, lakes and gardens but is also home to the amazing Tropical World which will be the venue for our new Macro & Close-up photography course.

East Riddlesdon Hall is a small but beautiful National Trust property in Keighley just outside Bradford. East Riddlesdon Hall won the Small Visitor Attraction of the Year award at The Welcome to Yorkshire’s White Rose Awards and upon entering the venue you will soon see why.

We have new photography courses also in 2012; we have portrait photography courses teaching you how to take stunning portrait photographs using natural light and flash. We have a very exciting Wildlife and Landscape photography course at Fountains Abbey teaching you hot to photograph deer, how to blur water and how to get sharp stunning landscapes. Finally as already mentioned we have our Macro & Close-up photography course at Tropical World Leeds.

As the year goes on I’m hoping to introduce a bird of prey wildlife course and a wedding photography course, so watch this space!

Why choose Going Digital Yorkshire?

Photography Course Learning Experience

Most of our photography courses in the Yorkshire begin in the classroom, with a welcome, introduction, then a presentation so that you know exactly what you'll be doing on the day and how to set your camera for predictable results, with detailed hand-outs for you to take home.
After the presentation we'll show you how you use the features of your camera and you'll complete your own 'crib sheet' to supplement your camera manual.
Our tutors are familiar with all the popular makes and models of digital camera, so we'll make sure you know how to use your camera before you begin to take any photographs.
By the end of the morning you will have gained knowledge and technical camera skills preparing for the hands-on experience that lies ahead.

Tutors

Our tutors are full time professional photographers with a wealth of teaching, technical and business experience. We will offer you guidance through and beyond your learning experience.

Portfolio of Courses

We offer a wide range of photography courses which is growing every year, we offer more courses, more frequently at unbelievable prices than any of our competitors.

In 2012 we will be offering Digital SLR1, Digital SLR2, Landscape 1 & 2, Portrait using Natural Light, Portrait using Flash, Portrait using Studio, Macro & Close-Up, Wedding Photography Course, Wedding Masterclass, Farne Islands Wildlife Photography,  Bird of Prey Photography and Photography Walks in some of the countries most stunning locations!

Hands-on Experience

We teach in some of the most amazing venues in Yorkshire so we have to get out and take some shots and have fun!
Our practical assignments give you hands on experience giving you the opportunity of putting the theory into practice. Once again there will be hand-outs you can take home with step by step details on how to set your camera up. This is where everything you've been taught on the morning will really drop in to place and we'll have so much fun. When the practical is complete the learning doesn’t stop as we finish off in the class room reviewing your images, this is another great learning experience to highlight any issues you may have and to show you how much you have learned in one day!

Going Digital venues are handpicked for their location and surrounding beauty and inspiration. Yes other companies can teach you the same photography skills but we like to make sure our courses offer a little more with beautiful locations full of inspiration and photograph opportunities. We are not about sitting in a studio or walking the streets we want you to have a memorable day for the skills you have learnt as well as the location you have been taking your photographs.

Which Lens should I buy for Portrait Photography?

That’s the question I’ve been asked several times over the last couple of months and basically like most things photography it’s not straight forward with so many options to choose from. But there are a few pointers to consider when choosing the right portrait lens for you.
Firstly the kind of camera you have; for example if you have a camera with a crop factor then your focal length can start say from 30mm as this is going to give you a min focal length close to 50mm which is a good start for portraits. A good portrait lens focal range is anywhere between 50 to 100mm; shooting in wide angle can be a little unflattering on the subject. But don't forget the crop factor; a 50mm lens will capture images on your digital SLR more like a 75mm lens on a full frame digital SLR such as the Canon 5D MKII.
So it’s something to bear in mind when buying a lens, does my camera have a crop factor? If so what is it?
Secondly how fast do you want the lens i.e. what’s the maximum aperture your potential lenses have and is it consistent throughout the focal range? If you require F2.8 throughout the focal range then it’s going to cost you a bit more than F4 throughout the focal range. If your budget does not stretch to that then you will have to be prepared for a lens with max aperture at F3.5 wide angle and F5.6 at telephoto. Not only will the wide aperture give you  a fast shutter speed (due to more light entering the camera), it will also give you those beautiful blurred backgrounds. Alternatively you could consider a prime lens, see below.
Prime lens or zoom lens? There is no hard and fast rule on this subject and I could do a whole article on the pro’s and cons.  Basically I would look at it this way; what type of portraits are you looking to take? If you are looking to do mainly studio work or adult lifestyle shots then I would always recommend a prime lens, reason being you are in total control of the situation. Some prime lenses give you a lot of aperture for your money and can be dual purpose. For example the Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro lens makes a fantastic portrait lens as well as a macro lens. The L series lens can be bought for under £750 and the non L series lens can be bought for under £400 both are superb lenses.
But let’s say you want to shoot weddings and lifestyle shots of kids doing what kids do best being very unpredictable. Unless you want to move around a lot you need that versatility to get those candid shots you looking for and that’s when the zoom lens plays its part. This is the reason why you see some wedding photographers with two cameras or two photographers. Usually one camera will have the prime lens for those portraits of the bride and groom and one with a zoom lens capturing the candid shots and the drama of the day. What do I use? Well when I’m doing a wedding I’ll use two lenses a Canon 70-200mm F2.8 and a Canon 24-105mm F4. The 24-105mm lens is used for the outdoor shots plus I can get a nice focal length for group shots. The 70-200mm is used for the low light shots such as a church or reception and those candid shots. (plus I’m a little lazy!)
Why not attend our Portrait Photography course and try your lens out for the day along with expert tuition!
